Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Frequently Asked LIHEAP Questions
What is LIHEAP?
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program has been in existence since
1981 and helps income-eligible Pennsylvanians meet their winter home
heating needs. LIHEAP is not a public assistance program, although
it is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. UGI
Penn Natural Gas is again conducting an extensive promotion of LIHEAP. Each
year, UGI-PNG extends its business hours and has representatives available
at off-site locations to explain the program and assist in the application
process.
How does LIHEAP aid low-income families and individuals?
There are two types of financial help available through LIHEAP. Cash
grants are paid directly to UGI Penn Natural Gas to help
a household pay its monthly heating bill. Crisis grants are
awarded when a household is in danger of being without heat.
Who is eligible for assistance through LIHEAP?
The Pennsylvania income limit has been raised to 150% of the federal
poverty level for individuals and families. That means that
a family of four with an income of up to $30,000 a year could receive
help paying their heating bills. Click here for a complete
listing of LIHEAP income guidelines.
Why is LIHEAP necessary in addition to the help UGI Penn Natural
Gas provides to low-income households?
Many programs exist through UGI Penn Natural Gas and other agencies
that help low-income Pennsylvanians with heating expenses and bill
management; however, no one program can do it alone. The more
resources a customer has, the better their chances are of receiving
the help they need.
Can I receive both a cash grant and a crisis grant?
Yes. Depending on your income-eligibility and the crisis you are
facing, you may receive a cash grant and one or more crisis grants.
